WHAT DO WE MEAN BY "SOCIALLY ENGAGED" VISUAL AND LITERARY ART?

Being a socially engaged visual and literary art space means we are committed to:

  • nurturing and exhibiting work that:

    • opens up new ways of seeing individual lives and their contexts

    • explores human rights, social justice and social change issues

    • addresses issues of sustainability, climate and the environment

    • engages current events and issues of community concern

    • expands who we see as artists or writers

  • expanding equity and diversity in the arts

  • outreach and relationship-building with groups and organizations representing people with less structural privilege

  • creating events that bring differing communities together for meaningful dialogue

  • bringing art and literature beyond the building and into public spaces
